Event Report
The 18th and 19th of April 2009 brought about something that Australian Supernatural fans thought would never happen. With help from the OZChicks (a group of dedicated Supernatural fans based here in Australia) The Hub Productions were able to bring out the Stars of Supernatural, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as well as Misha Collins for two days of Q&A's, photos, signings, auctions, raffles and much more, in Sydney. Below you will find reports from fans who attended this once in a lifetime event but we will try and give you a brief overview here first.
The Saturday morning saw almost 1000 fans arrive to kick off what would be a spectacular weekend. First order of business was the photo sessions, where fans got to have their photos taken with Jensen, Jared and Misha. A few extra lucky fans even got to indulge themselves in a "Supernatural Sandwich" which was them in the middle of Jensen and Jared! There were squeals, screams and even a few tears as fans got to meet the guys for the first time up close and personal.
From there we moved onto the first Q&A of the day with Misha Collins. At the time Misha was a relative newcomer to the Supernatural world and many people weren't sure what to expect. But from the minute Misha walked out onto the stage it was obvious that they were in for a treat. When he sat down he realised he couldn't hold onto both the microphone and his bottle of water comfortably and ask if a table was possible, when our delightful MC Libby proceeded to bring one over to him he then jokingly asked if he could also get a pony. (The next day he was inundated with presents of toy ponies from fans.) This set the tone for the rest of his talk as he answered questions from the audience, told stories, cracked jokes and generally kept the attendees very well entertained. A running theme throughout his talk was the fact that for an angel, Castiel certainly is a wuss.
Next up on stage was Jared Padalecki. Already hyped up for his talk, the spinning chair and enormous bag of Fantales left on the stage didn't help. Having never eaten Fantales before, Jared was quite intrigued by them and learnt the hard way, that talking while eating them is not exactly the easiest task in the world. This did nothing to stop him from eating them all throughout his talk however! Along with some great stories about working on Supernatural Jared had a few jokes of his own to share. When asked by an attendee "If you could date one female character from Supernatural, who would it be?" He responded with an enthusiastic "Dean Winchester!" which got him a lot of laughs and cheers from the crowd. At the end of his talk we auctioned the "Shirt off his back" to raise money for the Starlight Foundation. The bidding went on while Jared proceeded to draw on the shirt and wipe his sweat on all over it. In the end it went for a brilliant $1200! The winner also got an added bonus when Jared gave them a massive hug when they went to the stage to collect their prize.
The last talk of the day belonged to Jensen Ackles. Whilst he wasn't as hyper as Jared or as crazy as Misha , he had no problems holding the attendees attention as he spoke about his experiences on the set and shared his thoughts about his character. The audience had a little bit of a thrill when Jensen complained about Jared being a slob and leaving his things all over the stage and Jared popped his head out the stage door to defend himself. At the end of his talk we also auctioned off a shirt for Jared. We were all stunned when the bidding not not only topped the price the price that Jared's went for, but then doubled it in quick succession. In the end it went for over $4000 to a very lucky bidder who should be proud of herself for the money she raised for the Starlight foundation.
The last port of call for the day was the autograph session. The boys all sat and signed for hours, chatting to each fan and making sure they got that special moment. That night was the evening function for the Platinum and VIP ticket holders. The excitement level was high as the boys circulated the room chatting to fans and mingling with them.
Sunday heralded the second day of the event. Once again there was almost 1000 attendees, with many of them returning from Saturday for another Day of Supernatural goodness. Once again with started with the photo ops. Then we moved onto Misha's talk. He impressed the audience with his humour and intelligence once again, but I think the highlight was when Jared burst onto stage and pretended to beat Misha up.
Sunday was a little different in that Jensen and Jared only did separate talks for about half hour each before we put them both on stage together. Not wanting to be left out of the fun Misha snuck into the back of the auditorium, snagged a microphone and asked in a high pitched voice "Is it hard to play brothers when you're lovers in real life?" Needless to say, it brought the house down. The boys shirts were auctioned again with them each going for over $2000 this time.
Then it was onto the autograph session again for those who missed out the day before. Once again, there were some squeals, screams, tears and even a fainter or two!
All in all it was a really great weekend with amazing guest, fabulous attendees and lots of fun had by all involved!
